Possessing a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school zone, while possessing a valid concealed carry license, you are legal. Without one and possessing a firearm, you are breaking both state and federal law.
Monday, June 16, 2025, the Federal 5th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the long established federal school gun free zone law (18 U.S.C. § 922(q)(2)(A). RULING
The ruling leaves in effect one of the most expansive “sensitive places” restrictions for firearm possession in all of federal law. It deals a blow to Second Amendment advocates who have long felt that the law’s 1000-foot buffer zone around school property is overreaching a excessive.
A person possessing a firearm, within 1,000 feet of a school zone, public or private school, regardless if the school is in session or not, is committing both a state and federal felony.
Possession includes the transportation of a firearm in a private vehicle, traveling through a school zone. Again, regardless if it is a public or private school, it the school is in session or not.
Exception to the law: A person possessing a valid concealed carry license may legally possess or transport a firearm in a private vehicle, within a school zone, notwithstanding, in accordance state and local laws.
The possession of a valid concealed carry weapons license or recognized permit, issued another state, exempts the person from the law.

At a recent White House press briefing, Karoline Leavitt, President Trump’s press secretary, faced a direct question about concealed carry rights. A reporter asked if there were any “ongoing efforts for national reciprocity” so that Americans could carry concealed weapons “in all 50 beautiful states.” Leavitt didn’t dodge the question. Instead, she made it clear: the Trump administration is supportive of the idea, but Congress would have to act first.
According to Leavitt, this is something Trump talked about “on the campaign trail for sure.” Her message was simple – Trump backs law-abiding gun owners, but passing a national reciprocity law requires legislative support.

DAVENPORT, Fla. (WFLA) – May 21, 2025 — A stepfather was accused of killing his adult stepson in Davenport on Wednesday.
A 9-year-old boy became upset after being disciplined over playing a video game and grabbed a handgun from a nightstand drawer of his parents’ bedroom.
Feb. 24, 2025 – A 4-year-old Davenport boy has died of a self-inflicted gunshot after finding a firearm in his family’s car Friday night. Law enforcement is calling for tighter gun safety, as it’s the second such death in Polk County this year.
Police Chief Steven Parker said Chosen’s death should serve as a “stark reminder” of best practices and gun safety for firearm owners.
The firearm in the Morris family’s vehicle was legally owned by Robert Morris, who Parker said told police he owned it for personal safety on his travel to and from work.
Robert Morris told detectives he usually takes the firearm out of the car on Thursday nights when he arrives home from work, and securely stores it in his bedroom.
“He forgot. He simply forgot,” the chief said. “He forgot Thursday, this happens Friday.”
Parker said gun owners need to know exactly where their firearms are at all times, and make sure they are secure when not in their immediate possession.
This is the second child, self-inflicted, accidental gunshot death in Polk County, Florida in as many months.

Major Smith died Tuesday at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, two days after he found a gun in a car outside his residence on West Crawford Street and accidentally shot himself, Lakeland police said.
