Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) is calling for federal officials to help her curb gun violence in the city and target its root causes.

In a speech on Monday, Lightfoot urged U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to utilize agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to address illegal firearms and for more prosecutors to bring criminal cases, according to The Chicago Tribune.

“Keeping you safe is my priority — not one of, but the first and primary priority,” Lightfoot said to the citizens of Chicago. “I wake every morning with this as my first concern and I push myself and all involved to step up and do more and better because we cannot continue to endure the level of violence that we are now experiencing.”

See Mayor Lightfoot’s earlier answer to preventing shooting deaths in Chicago (https://wordpress.com/post/ingaugeofpolkcounty.com/15788) September 29, 2021.

The mayor also requested that judges in Cook County stop releasing people charged with violent crimes including murder, aggravated gun possession, sex crimes, illegal gun possession and kidnapping on electric monitoring, the Tribune noted.

The solutions proposed by Lightfoot, none of which are new strategies, were reportedly criticized as “regressive” and “clearly unconstitutional.”

Cook County Public Defender Sharone Mitchell told the Tribune the mayor “diagnosed the very real root causes of violence, the solutions were textbook policymaking based on fear.”

“The mayor’s regressive proposal calls for the pretrial detention of thousands of people who haven’t been convicted of anything and the plan could only be achieved by exploding the population of Cook County Jail in the middle of a pandemic,” Mitchell said.

Lightfoot’s speech comes as Chicago police data indicated that 3,411 shootings occurred in 2021 as of earlier this month, a 9 percent increase from last year.

LAKELAND HOMEOWNER SHOOTS INTRUDER – Receives Praise from Sheriff Grady Judd

“I’m proud of our homeowner for defending himself,”

“I’m proud of our homeowner for defending himself,” Judd added. “It’s called a ‘Castle Doctrine.’ He has the right to protect himself and his home from unknown intruders.”

“He had a gun, he knew how to use it, it was loaded, and he shot him a lot,” Judd said. “He gave him an early Christmas present. Only Santa Claus gets to come in your house — and Santa Claus is invited.”

According to police, the homeowner says an intruder tossed a flower pot through the glass French doors of the home in an attempt to gain entry from the back porch. The homeowner then shot the intruder three times.

Police arrived on the scene and found 42-year-old Steven Stillwell shot on the living room floor. Stillwell was rushed to the hospital and was in critical, but stable condition.

A shotgun belonging to Stillwell was found laying on the ground in the backyard of the home.

According to PCSO, the suspect has an extensive arrest history, with 14 felonies and five misdemeanors, including multiple burglaries and larcenies, DUI, drug possession, dealing in stolen property, fraud, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a weapon/ammunition by a convicted felon. He also has 11 re-arrest charges, with multiple violations of probation.

The Ammunition Shortage – Solution to the problem . . .

Slow down and control your fire! Buy only what ammunition you currently need from legitimate retail outlets or gun clubs.

Starve the scalpers!

Scalpers Are Driving Up Ammunition Costs and Contributing to the Ammo Shortage

OUTDOOR LIFE – FEB 12, 2021

Yes, the shelves are empty. Yes, backorders are the norm. Yes, prices have skyrocketed since May 2020. However, there is a solution. Slow down and control your fire.

Although not to this degree, ammunition shortages have occured before.

  • 2008 – 2010 – The 2008 election of President Barack Obama triggered increased sales of both firearms and ammunition. USA Today
  • December 2012 – 2016 – In December 2012, a new wave of panic buying was driven by the perceived likelihood of new firearm control laws being passed by Congress and state governments in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Curently, ammuniton can be found readily available online, on certain websites and at gun shows. But, at what price? The ammunition being sold online by private vendors and at gun shows is either old stock that has been setting on the floor in the back of someone’s closet or has been purchased in bulk from and gun shop or other retail outlet and marked up 2, 3 or 4 times the purchase price.

Recommendation

Slow down and control your fire! Refuse to pay the inflated prices, demanded by entrepreneurial, kitchen table scalpers selling on the Internet and at gun shows. Buy only what ammunition you currently need from legitimate retail outlets or gun clubs.

On the manufacturing front

Ammunition is being manufactured at a pace not seen since World War II.

Official statement from Jason Vanderbrink, president Federal / CCI / Speer / Remington Ammunition . . .

Economics 101Quid foro feret

The bottom line: Buy only the ammuniton you need to keep up your skills and a little extra for any unexpected developments, and only buy from legitamate retail vendors. Starve out the scalpers. Be patient, ammunition will once again become readily available and the prices will come down.

Colorado: One Good Guy With A Gun Takes Out Cop Killer, Prevents Mass Shooting – Revisited

This incident and its hero is being revisited as new police video has only recently been released. The video below provides lessons to be learned from the John Hurley incident in Olde Town – Arvada, Colorado, June 21, 2021.

“We want to thank and recognize John as we believe that his actions saved more lives from being taken. He needs to be recognized by Arvada and all the citizens of Colorado for his brave and selfless actions.”

John Hurley of Golden is being remembered as a hero for stopping gunman Ronald Troyke.

Hurley was apparently shopping at the Army Navy Surplus store, as he frequently did.

“John pulled into our parking lot around 1:30 and was contemplatively smoking a cigarette near his car,” wrote store owner Steven Cohen. “Within under a minute upon John entering the store, 10-15 shots of what sounded like a rifle or tactical shotgun were fired in the square 50 yards away.”

Codi Groszkiewicz, a waitress Schoolhouse Kitchen and Libations, watched out a kitchen window, saw Hurley, in a bright orange shirt, bolt out of the surplus store.
“And he was running straight towards where we heard those shots. Everyone else was running in the other direction,” Groszkiewicz said. “I just know that he was going out there into the middle of all the danger that I ever could have imagined in my life.”

“John and another unknown customer unrelated to John went out of the open door toward the square with clear intent to eliminate the threat,” wrote Cohen. “While the unknown customer turned left to assess the situation without pulling out a weapon, John ran quickly without hesitation straight toward the shooter.”

“John shouted at onlookers behind him to stay inside and hide because the gunman was coming back,” wrote Cohen. “John used this as an opportunity to run towards the library where the shooter was and hid behind a brick wall. Upon the shooter walking again back toward the square, John pulled out his concealed pistol and shot 5-6 rounds toward the suspect,” Cohen wrote.

Keeping the shooter at bay for any amount of time may have had an effect.

“That’s why he was more secured in an area where he couldn’t get away to do anything else because of where he was cornered, he was trapped,” said Groszkiewicz.

“There was no other police officers around at the time. There was no one else there to prevent this from happening. And this man ran,” she related.

As she watched from the window in the restaurant, she also realized they needed to get customers to safety.

“My first instinct was to try to get everybody that I could into the basement.”

They locked the doors. When they emerged, she saw first responders putting someone on a stretcher and taking them away.

Only later in the day did she learn the good Samaritan was dead.

Speaking about it was difficult for Codi.

“I wanted to do this because I wanted people to know what he did especially… his sister or anyone of his family members that it was the bravest, most selfless thing that I’ve ever witnessed in my life.”

Cohen also wants it made clear what he saw from a man he knew as a regular customer was heroic.

“We want to thank and recognize John as we believe that his actions saved more lives from being taken. He needs to be recognized by Arvada and all the citizens of Colorado for his brave and selfless actions.”

Groszkiewicz feels a bond with Hurley.
“He will forever be in my heart for what he did because, like I said, we don’t know what would have happened to any of us… He risked everything that he possibly could to go out there and for us and it’s the most selfless, bravest thing I’ve ever witnessed.”

Remington Arms Leaving New York, Moving To Georgia

Remington to Invest $100 Million in New Gun Factory

The Associated Press – Gun maker Remington Firearms will invest $100 million to move its headquarters from upstate New York to Georgia with plans to open a factory and research operation there. The company announced that it will hire 856 people over five years.

November 10, 2021 –

(TheDailyHorn.com) – In 1816, 22-year-old Eliphalet Remington II founded Remington Arms Company in 1816 and quickly turned his products into a household name. By the middle of the 1800s, Remington was a major competitor in gun manufacturing, along with Samuel Colt and Daniel Wesson — all brands familiar to gun owners today. Remington played a vital role in the formation of the American West. Today, the company makes guns for sports, self-defense, and the military.

On Monday, November 8, Remington Arms announced that it was leaving its New York roots and relocating to more hospitable territory. The nation’s oldest gunmaker said it’s moving to LaGrange, Georgia, approximately 70 miles from Atlanta. The company is also opening a new factory and research operation, and plans to hire more than 850 people over the next five years.

Remington made some of America’s most popular guns, including the Beals Sporting Rifle sported by Annie Oakley, George Armstrong Custer’s Creedmoor Target Rifle, the No. 1 Rolling Block Rifle carried by Buffalo Bill, and many other rifles, shotguns, and handguns.

Over the last several years, numerous gun manufactures left their roots in the Northeast for more gun-friendly states in the South and West. Remington said it was excited to move to Georgia, a state that welcomes and supports its business model.

Deranged man beats and stabs co-workers in Davenport, Florida.

3rd victim dies after angry co-worker’s rampage

Sun, October 3, 2021

DAVENPORT, Fla. (AP) — Authorities said Sunday a third victim has died following a violent attack where an angry electrician wielding a knife and baseball bat killed three co-workers and injured another at the Florida home they shared.

Polk County Sheriff’s officials said electrician Shaun Runyon got into the argument with his supervisor Friday, punching the man and fleeing the job site. He returned to the Davenport home he where he was temporarily living with his co-workers Saturday and beat one man to death while he slept, killed another man on the front porch and chased another victim into the street, beating him badly with a bat, Sheriff Grady Judd said.

A fourth victim suffered critical injuries and later died at the hospital. Another man, his wife and their 7-year-old daughter escaped unharmed. Authorities did not release the identities of the victims.

Runyon and seven co-workers and their families were living at the home rented by a Pennsylvania company, J & B Electric, Inc.

It’s unclear what prompted the fight between 39-year-old Runyon and his supervisor Friday, but Sheriff Judd said he confessed.

He was charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. It was not immediately clear if he had retained a lawyer to comment on the charges.

Runyon fled the home, turning up hours later at the home of a random Lake Wales couple, wearing bloody clothes and telling them he’d been raped, according to the sheriff.

Judd said the man discarded his bloody clothes at the home as they urged him to go to the hospital where he was later taken into custody.

CHICAGO’S ANSWER TO SHOOTING DEATHS – Install ‘Bleeding Control Kits’ around the city

Yes, this is for real. It is not a joke.

Chicago installing ‘Bleeding Control Kits’ around city amid gun violence

THE HILL – BY REMA RAHMAN – 09/29/21

Chicago has begun installing “Bleeding Control Kits” across the city under the new Safe Chicago program amid an increase in gun violence.

The city will install 426 Bleeding Control Kits in 269 Chicago buildings, including City Hall and Chicago Public Library locations. Each kit can treat up to eight victims.

Every kit comes equipped with a tourniquet, gauze, shears, gloves, and an instruction manual on how to best use it in instances of “life threatening bleeding emergencies” that can result from falls, penetrating injuries (such as stabbings), gunshot wounds, and more.

Announced earlier this month to coincide with National Preparedness Month, the program was launched by the Office of Emergency Management and Communications and the Federal Emergency Management Agency in partnership with the Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Police Department, and Assets and Information Services.

However, it has received renewed attention addressing gun violence following the release Monday’s updated crime stats from the Chicago Police Department.

As of Monday, Chicago has reported 2,688 shootings, an 11 percent increase from this time last year, as well as 602 homicides, marking a 4 percent increase. The data does not specify the homicide causes of death.
