BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Gun laws are once again a topic ahead of the elections, with Brevard County approving a resolution in hopes to change concealed weapons laws.
The resolution aims to support the expansion of “lawful statewide open carry of firearms.” As District 2 Commissioner Bryan Lober explained, the outline of a gun is enough to alarm someone, so he wants guns out in the open.
“If I’m carrying a concealed weapons, I don’t want everyone under the sun to see the outline of a gun because, they may figure that the person is hiding something — a reason for concealing the gun,” Lober said.
Despite the approval of the resolution, political analyst Dr. Susan MacManus says resolutions are just opinions from the county.
“You’ll see a lot of politics involved with this. You’ll see Democrats running against Republicans (who) most likely will say we don’t want this, so elect me,” MacManus said.
The resolution claims some concealed permit holders worry about alarming people, so they chose to venture unarmed especially during a time marked by “riots,” the resolution states.
But it’s going to take more than the Brevard County Legislative Delegation supporting these efforts to change state law. The Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate both need to agree with the resolution this upcoming 2021 legislative session.
But for Brevard County Commissioner Lober, it’s more about keeping up with the times.
“It’s time for us to join the vast majority of states over 90 percent of the states in this country that allow open carry,” he says.
While county commissioners agreed that law-biding citizens who qualify for a concealed weapons permit should get a gun if they so choose to, one commissioner was uncomfortable with open-carry because of being able to see the firearm.
It’s now up to the Brevard County Legislative Delegation to send the resolution to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which handles concealed carry permits, in hopes of creating legislation to introduce this upcoming year.

WESLEY CHAPEL, FL — Two armed intruders were shot dead and a third was wounded when a homeowner fired on them early Friday, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
The homeowner said he was inside his home playing video games when at about 12:43 a.m. he heard the glass of his laundry room door shatter, according to a sheriff’s report. He saw an arm reach inside to unlock the door. Then the homeowner said he saw a masked man walk in and aim a gun at him.
The homeowner said he grabbed his Glock 9mm pistol, which was just a few feet away, and fired several times at the intruder. He saw the intruder fall down, the report said.
Then a second masked intruder entered the house, and the homeowner said he fired at him, too. That intruder also collapsed.
The masked men were aiming their weapons at the homeowner when they were shot, said Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco.
The homeowner said he then saw a third intruder enter, the report said. The homeowner started firing again, but said his Glock jammed. Then he said he grabbed a Kriss Vector 10mm semi-automatic rifle, but didn’t fire it. The third intruder had run away.
The homeowner said he called his neighbor for help and told him he had just shot two intruders. While the homeowner was on the phone with 911, he said, he heard his neighbor yelling outside: The neighbor had detained the third intruder, who was wounded, at gunpoint in the front yard. The homeowner went outside to help.
“The victim advised he shot all three intruders because they were armed and forced entry into his home and he believed they were going to kill him,” said an arrest report.
When deputies arrived, the two intruders were pronounced dead at the scene. The third was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
Tramel was questioned at Tampa General Hospital but denied involvement, deputies said. Then he told them that Casado wanted to rob the homeowner, according to his arrest report, so he rode with the two men. Thy wore masks and gloves and armed themselves.
EDITORIAL COMMENT:
If you think having taken a ‘concealed carry class’, owning a little pistol and taking a couple of trips to a range to shoot at paper target hanging from a wire, prepares you for this type of situation, you are delusional.
You need to have defensive shooting training. You need to have a defensive firearm. You need to have a defensive mindset.
