When It Is NOT ‘Stand Your Ground’

Something to keep in mind when carrying a deadly weapon in public.

  • The threatened use or use of deadly force must be necessary to thwart an imminent threat to your personal safety, well-being or life or that of those in your immediate vicinity.
  • You must have ‘clean hands’. You cannot instigate or provoke the incident.
  • You cannot pursue or stalk the would be assailant.
  • You must have the legal right to be where the incident occurs.

In the incident describe below, the man charged with manslaughter will have some time to think about his actions.

When Considering A Concealed Carry Class

It should to be understood that not all concealed carry classes are alike.

  • Most are ‘certificate mills’.
  • Few provide any actual handgun training.

Those classes conducted in rented hotel rooms are the greatest example.

Educate yourself, ask questions, know what you are spending your money and time on before you commit to a class.

Are you aware that in a hotel conducted concealed carry class:

  • There is no firearm training conducted
  • There is no trip to a range to fire a real handgun
  • The firearm proficiency evaluation involves the firing of ONE paint cartridge at a paper target taped to the hotel room wall

If you are wanting a handgun training class that both provides you with a certificate of training that makes you eligible for applying for a Florida concealed carry weapons license and trains you in the use of a handgun, you will want to take our CCW-101 Handgun/Concealed Carry Qualification Training class.

The cost of our CCW-101 Handgun/Concealed Carry Qualification Training class (CCW-101): $75. A certificate of training, good for applying for a Florida concealed carry weapons license, is issued upon class completion.

For those who feel they are proficient in the use of a handgun and qualified to carry a deadly weapon in public, not needing any firearms training, there is our Concealed Carry – Minimum Standards class (CCW -100).

  • The cost of our Concealed Carry – Minimum Standards class (CCW-100): $50
  • Pre-registration and full payment is required. No walk-ins are permitted.
  • Our Concealed Carry –Minimum Standards class (CCW-100) is not a firearms training class.

Our concealed carry minimum standards class provides all the instruction necessary to comply with the State of Florida’s training requirement for applying for a Florida concealed carry weapons license. No other training is required. All materials and equipment is provided. You only need to bring your driver’s license. A certificate of training, good for applying for a Florida concealed carry weapons license, is issued upon class completion.

Considering Attending A Hotel Concealed Carry Class?

Considering taking a concealed carry weapons class conducted at a local hotel?

Why?

  • Why would you take a concealed carry class from an unknown, out-of-town provider with no ties to your local community?
  • Why would you take a concealed carry class in a rented hotel room?
  • In a COVID-19 environment, why would you subject yourself to sitting in a crowded room with 20 – 30 students?
  • Why would you take a concealed carry class that may not be recognized by the State of Florida for applying for a Florida concealed carry weapons license?

Florida law requires that anyone conducting an approved concealed carry weapons training class must witness the student “. . . . discharge of the firearm included live fire using a firearm and ammunition as defined in fs. 790.001; . . . .” Florida Statute 790.06.(2)(h)7

When considering taking a hotel conducted concealed carry weapons class, call and ask where the State required live-fire training is conducted. Oh, that is if they provided a phone number to call.

If the concealed carry weapons license class conducted in a rented hotel room does not include a trip the the range and involve the firing of a firearm using live ammunition, the training is not valid for applying for a State of Florida concealed carry weapons license.

Beware!

Those conducting hotel concealed carry weapons classes may claim to be certified NRA instructors. Do not be misled! Official NRA firearms and concealed carry classes are never taught in rented hotel rooms or at gun shows.

If you take a concealed carry weapons license class that does not include firing live ammunition from a real firearm, you risk losing your license processing and application fee and having your licensed revoked, if it is discovered after issuance.

Simulated firing does not qualify as “live-fire” and is not recognized by the State of Florida.
